23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
A roadside country church where everyone is someone and Jesus Christ is Lord
Next, we move on to stop 3 on Romans Road. It begins by telling us the cost of the sin we’ve just learned about. It’s death, plain and simple. The death referred to here is an eternal death which is separation from God. You see God is the only perfect one. The alpha and omega. He created everything exactly to his specification so all He does is right. Sin, as we’ve already learned, is anything displeasing to God. Since He is perfect, He cannot reside with sin. Sin is the one thing that creates distance between us and God. This is true in our life on earth as well as after our life here.
If we have sin in our life, it creates distance from God and it is harder to feel His love, compassion and protection. The same is true when we leave this world. The problem is when your earthly body dies, there are only two destinations. Heaven and Hell. If you aren’t in one, you are, by default, in the other.
Thankfully the second half of this verse introduces us to His love and plan for us to spend eternity with Him. He has provided our pardon (His Son) for the crime of sin of which, we’ve already learned, we are all guilty. We’ll learn more about this as we travel on.
